Which smartphone is the ideal purchase for consumers? We compare the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini against the OnePlus One to see which device is better.
In terms of design and display, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has a smaller display measuring 4.5inches, being 0.6inches smaller than its predecessor and 1 inch shorter than its opponent. It has a Super AMOLED which supports a resolution of 720x1280pixels and 326ppi.
The OnePlus One has a LTPS LCD display and it supports a higher resolution of 1080x1920pixels, which gives a pixel density of 401ppi.
The dimensions of the S5 Mini are 131.1×64.8×9.1 mm and it weighs 120 grams, while the OnePlus One measures 152.9×75.9×8.9 mm and weighs 42 grams more.
In addition, the Samsung device features a plastic back panel with perforated dots, just like its brother, and has a fake metal band that covers the corners. The OnePlus device, on the other hand, has a magnesium case and the back is customizable in bamboo, Kevlar or denim textures.
For the hardware and OS, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has a Cortex A7 processor with four cores, clocked at 1.4GHz, supported by an Exynos 3 Quad 3470 chipset and which uses a Mali-400MP4 GPU. The RAM capacity is 1.5GB and the internal memory is 16GB, but with a microSD card you can get up to 64GB.
The OnePlus One has a quad core Krait 400 processor with the clock speed of 2.5GHz, based on a Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset and the GPU is Adreno 330. It hosts 3GB of RAM and 16/64GB of built in storage, but you’ll have to settle with these capacities, because they’re unexpandable.
Both smartphones run on the Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS, but only the OnePlus One received the 4.4.4 (KitKat) update. The S5 Mini uses Samsung’s own TouchWiz easy-to-use interface, while the OnePlus One comes with CyanogenMod 11S UI.
For battery and camera specs, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has a Li-Ion 2100mAh battery which allows up to 10 hours of talk time on 3G. The OnePlus One has a much more powerful Li-Po 3100mAh battery, but it’s non-removable.
The Samsung device comes with an 8MP nice back snapper with autofocus, LED flash, HDR, touch focus and many other features, while the OnePlus smartphone has a more advanced back camera of 13MP with dual-LED flash and other similar features. The Samsung device is capable of recording videos at 1080p@30fps, while its rival records at 2160p@30fps, 2160p(DCI)@24fps and at a lower resolution. The front cameras are 2.1MP (S5 Mini) and 5MP (OnePlus One).
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini cost $515 in amazon.com as the OnePlus One 16GB variant is cost $299 and the 64GB variant is around $349.
