With Burton playing on Sunday the Robins moved to the top of the table at this early stage of the campaign but were made to fight all the way by a Morecambe side who maintained their own excellent start to the season.

The point moved the Shrimps up to second behind the Robins and the entertaining stalemate left Yates satisfied in the end.

He said: "It was a great point in the end against a good side who I think will surprise a few teams this year.

"I'm disappointed that we didn't win it after being so strong in the first half but we were on the back foot for long periods after the break.

"We definitely bossed the first half and created a few chances but the second half was totally different.

"They got a lot braver and played some good football but we stood firm and kept a clean sheet, which is something I don't think we would have done last year.

"The lads are really disappointed that they haven't won the game and that says a lot about them.

"How it ended up 0-0 I'll never know but there are a lot of positives we can take from the game."

Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche saved well from Craig Braham-Barrett and Byron Harrison, while Steve Elliott and Matthew Taylor both headed over from corners in the first half.

The hosts hit back in the second period with Jack Redshaw drilling an effort inches wide and substitute Paul Mullin going close on three occasions.

Shrimps' boss Jim Bentley also believed a draw was a fair outcome.

He said: "We were poor in the first half and looked pretty disjointed which was disappointing.

"We didn't start well at all, didn't win enough second balls and to be honest I was happy to go in at the break level to be honest because we were second best.

"But the second half was a different affair and I thought we were excellent. We changed a few things and brought on Paul Mullin and that sparked us into life.

"We got into some good opportunities and were definitely the better side but couldn't go on to win the game.

"But we took the game to them and ended up on top but unfortunately couldn't get the goal and a draw was probably a fair result overall against a side who I think will be there or thereabouts on that evidence.

"On another day we will play better but we will take the point and move on."
