Cain Velasquez's next fight opponent Fabricio Werdum is deserving of the title shot, according to the champion himself. The Mexican heavyweight also promises a lengthy title reign in the UFC.
Cain Velasquez's next fight is scheduled for UFC 180 on November 15th, at the champion's home country of Mexico City. Velasquez will be defending his title for the third time since winning it back from Junior Dos Santos in December 2012 at UFC 155.
Challenger Fabricio Werdum had won four straight fights since his UFC return in February 2012. During his absence from the Octagon, Werdum competed for rival promotion company Strikeforce, wherein he defeated Fedor Emelianenko, who is also considered as "the greatest mixed martial arts fighter alive."
These accolades have made Cain Velasquez respect his challenger, whom he believes deserves the title shot.
"It's definitely nice to prepare for someone new, but that doesn't matter to me," Velasquez said in an interview Bleacher Report. "Whoever earns a shot, earns the shot and that is who I'm going to fight. I don't care if I have to fight the same guy over and over again, as long as he earned the shot to fight me, then I'm fine with it."
Both fighters will be coaching against each other in the inaugural Ultimate Fighter: Latin America, which premiered last month. It is also the first time the Mexican champion will be involved with the UFC's famed reality show.
But despite his obligations and commitments such as filming the show, Velasquez gave the assurance that he does what he can to keep himself in tip-top shape.
"I'm always trying to improve and always trying to get better as far as learning new skills and techniques go," Velasquez continued. "I'm not looking to plateau. I'm always working to get better. That's what my focus is on."
Along with the Cain Velasquez next fight news, the fighter also sent a message to the rest of the UFC's heavyweight division, as he promised that the belt would remain around his waist for a long time.
"This is just the next step for me," he added. "I want to keep doing this. I am going to keep winning and staying in this position."
