Jacare Souza's next fight has yet to be scheduled, but the Brazilian middleweight contender wants a title shot against reigning champion Chris Weidman. UFC President Dana White, however, disagreed, as he believes "Jacare" would still need one more fight.
While Jacare Souza's next fight has no date or opponent name as of this posting, the Brazilian 185-pound sensation believes that he should be next in line for Chris Weidman's belt, after his performance and victory over former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi this past weekend.
In a report by MMA Fighting, Jacare displayed full control of the fight, both standing, and on the ground. What was described as a "clinic" during UFC Fight Night in Connecticut, ended in a successful guillotine choke care of Souza, with just 30 seconds left in the third round.
The 34-year old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt now holds a win-loss slate of 21-3 and 1 no contest, with 15 of those victories coming by way of submission.
Immediately after the fight, Jacare stated his case regarding his supposed shot at the title. For the 11-year mixed martial arts veteran, he should be the next in line for the highly coveted 185-pound title.
"If anyone doubts me, they are completely wrong," Souza said after the fight. "I am next for the title."
Jacare also compared his performance against Mousasi to that of Lyoto Machida's, who also faced the Dutch fighter in February.
"Lyoto fought him for five rounds, and I finished him," Souza added.
As Jacare clamored for a title shot, it was however, met by disagreement from UFC president Dana White. The company executive did commend Souza's performance against a top competitor like Mousasi, but he believes that one more fight is in order before it happens.
"He looked very impressive tonight," White said about Jacare Souza's next fight. "You know, I'm a huge Mousasi fan, and he picked him apart and wore him out. He looked fantastic tonight. And we talk about title shots, there's a title fight that's going to happen first."
"You can say [Souza] is next in line for a title," he continued. "Somebody's already next in line for the title, so obviously Jacare looked incredible tonight, he put on a great performance and I'm sure he'll fight again before we talk about title shots."
