Eddie Alvarez's next fight against Donald Cerrone is highly important for "The Silent Assassin", as he aims for victory against "Cowboy." This is because the former Bellator FC champ has vowed to lay down a beating on current number one lightweight contender, Gilbert "El Niño" Melendez.
Eddie Alvarez's next fight against Donald Cerrone is scheduled for September 27th, at UFC 178. But "The Silent Assassin" is already looking far ahead of his upcoming task, as he prepares for a potential match-up against Melendez, whom he had been trading barbs with.
The war of words began in March, back when Alvarez was still fighting under the UFC's rival company, Bellator FC. "The Silent Assasin", who was then the 155-pound champ of the organization, insinuated that Melendez was avoiding fighting him.
"He didn't want come here," Alvarez claimed. "Gilbert doesn't want to come anywhere where I'm at. Gilbert don't ever want to sign with a company where I'm at."
Alvarez's statements were then met by Melendez's allegations of the former's deterioration in terms of performance.
"I just wanted to fight him," Melendez responded in a recent interview. "I thought he was number one in the world. At this point, I don't feel that's the case. I think he's fallen off the last couple years to be honest."
Alvarez was further infuriated with "El Niño," after eventually hearing about the latter's most recent statements.
"Oh, is that what he thinks?" Alvarez said in an interview MMAFighting.com. "Tell you what, I think Diego Sanchez must have really landed good with those uppercuts when they fought last year, if that's the case. He must still be feeling them."
Eddie Alvarez's next fight later this month against Donald Cerrone may grant immediate title shots for whoever emerges the victor. This has given "The Silent Assassin" the motivation to win, but also hopes that Melendez comes out victorious in his own bout against Anthony Pettis in December.
"I hope Melendez beats Pettis," Alvarez added. "Nothing against Pettis, but I want Melendez to win that fight. I want to beat Donald and then finally get my hands on Melendez with the title up for grabs. Best of all worlds."
