Which smartphone is the better purchase? We compare the Motorola Moto G against the HTC Desire 500 to see which device is better.

In terms of design and display, the front panels on both smartphones have almost the same shape, being black with rounded corners, but the HTC Desire 500 has more elegant lines and its curvature is more pronounced. The white variant of this smartphone has the glossy rear panel with the camera and LED flash framed in red or blue and below there’s the HTC logo matching the same colors. Also, there’s a colored thin strip around the case, as well. It weighs 123 grams and measures 131.8×66.9×9.9 mm.

The Motorola Moto G on the other hand, has a non-removable back panel which comes in various matte colors. It has a rubbery bumper wrapping around the screen, so it won’t touch the surface when users place the phone with the face down. The display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, weighs 143 grams and it measures 129.9×65.9×11.6 mm.

The Motorola device has a bigger display of 4.5 inches (IPS LCD) with 720x1280 pixels and 326ppi, while the HTC device has a TFT screen sized at 4.3 inches with 480x800pixels and 217ppi and has a layer of HTC Sense UI 5.0 on top of it.

For the hardware and OS, both smartphones have quad core processors clocked at 1.2GHz, but the Motorola Moto G has a Cortex A7, while the HTC Desire 500 has a Cortex A5. The Motorola device uses a Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 chipset and an Adreno 305 GPU, while the HTC device has a Qualcomm MSM8225Q Snapdragon 200 chipset with Adreno 203 GPU. They also have 1GB of RAM, but the Moto G has two variants of 8 and 16GB which can’t be expanded, while the Desire 500 comes with a small memory of 4GB which supports microSD card for expansion up to 64GB.

The Motorla smartphone runs on the Android v4.3 (Jelly Bean), and it allows users to upgrade it to the latest v4.4.4 (KitKat), while the HTC device still operates on v4.1.2 (Jelly Bean). But, if users buy the Moto G, they'll get a 50GB of Google cloud storage, while if they want the Desire 500, they'll get 25GB cloud storage on DropBox.

For battery and camera specs, the Motorola Moto G has a non-removable Li-Ion 2070mAh battery which can deliver up to 24 hours of talking time. The HTC Desire 500 comes with a relatively smaller Li-Ion 1800mAh battery, which is removable, but with a smaller lifetime, as well (12 hours when talking on 3G)

The HTC device has a 8MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, LED flash, geo tagging, face and smile detection and video recording capabilities at 720p@30fps. Also, it has a better front camera of 1.6MP.

The Motorola smartphone has a basic 5MP back shooter with autofocus, LED flash, HDR and the same video record capabilities, while the front camera is 1.3MP.

The Motorola Moto G 16GB cost $180 and the 8GB variant is $20 cheaper. The HTC Desire 500 costs only $193.
