For the brawl during the media day in preparation for the Jon Jones' next fight, the Nevada Athletic Commission fined "Bones" for $50,000. The reigning UFC light heavyweight champion also lost his six-figure deal with Nike due to the fracas.
Jon Jones' next fight was originally slated for UFC 178 this coming weekend, but was moved to UFC 182 on January 3rd after "Bones" suffered an injury during training. Prior to its postponement, the pre-fight media went on as scheduled in August. It did not end well after a brawl erupted between the champion and his challenger, Daniel "DC" Cormier.
In a report by MMA Fighting, Nevada Attorney General Christopher Eccles deemed it necessary to slap a fine on both men as an effective means to prevent such untoward incident from happening again.
"There has to be some kind of activity to deter this activity," Eccles declared. "If it's just good for the paycheck, then it could happen again. And we obviously don't want this to happen again. It's bad for everybody involved."
Subsequently, Daniel Cormier was slapped with a $9,000 fine.
The Nevada Athletic Commission hearing prior to Jon Jones' next fight was held on Tuesday, covering other issues such as Floyd Mayweather's All-Access feature wherein marijuana use was involved, and Wanderlei Silva's drug test failure.
"Bones" did express his regret over the matter and how it "made MMA fighters look bad."
"I've never done anything to disgrace the sport," Jones said. "I've never swore on an interview in my seven-year career. I make a very conscious effort to be a great example and a role model. And so moments like this are embarrassing."
In a separate report by MMA Mania, Jon Jones had lost his six-figure deal with Nike. The current pound-for-pound MMA king is one of the three UFC fighters who hold a deal with the prominent sports apparel company, along with former champions Anderson Silva and Junior Dos Santos.
But despite this potential financial blow, "Bones" remained positive and opted to move on from what happened.
"A minor setback for a major comeback #victory," Jones said through his personal Twitter account.
