Frankie Edgar's next fight has been set against Cub Swanson as both men headline UFC Fight Night 57 on November 22nd in Austin, Texas. Both fighters are also unmindful of facing each other first instead of getting an immediate title shot.
Frankie Edgar's next fight against Cub Swanson would be for the number one contender spot and will face the winner of the rematch against reigning champion Jose Aldo and Chad "Money" Mendes at UFC 179 in October.
The news about Frankie Edgar's next fight was first announced through the official Twitter account of FOX Sports' UFC Tonight.
"BREAKING: Frankie Edgar will face Cub Swanson at featherweight in UFC Austin card on Nov. 22 #UFC," the tweet reads.
The rematch between Aldo and Mendes was originally scheduled for UFC 176 on August 2nd, but an injury suffered by the Brazilian champion during camp forced him to pull out of the card. The said turn of events drew would-be scenarios for the number one contender picture, involving both Edgar and Swanson.
It also created a minor rift between both men, who began calling each other out soon after. However, the instigation was done by Edgar's camp, care of manager Ali Abdelaziz, who tweeted an unofficial announcement about the match-up.
This, in turn, drew the ire of Swanson, who began describing Edgar's camp as "shady."
"Props to Frankie's camp for announcing fights that aren't even real." Swanson tweeted back. "Shady management at its finest!"
Edgar did defend his camp's actions saying that they would be facing each other sooner or later. But if there was one thing both men agreed on, it is being as active in competition as possible.
"If the winner gets hurt or if there is an immediate rematch then I spend another year of my prime on the bench," Swanson told MMA Fighting.
"I'm excited to fight Cub in a number one contender's fight and being one fight away from the title," said Edgar. "No. 1 (Mendes) is fighting for the title next, I'm No. 3, Cub is No. 2."
