The Dallas Cowboys is backing up C.J. Spillman after his name got caught in sexual assault investigation. Spillman still continues to join the practice with the team.
The team is currently faced with PR nightmares one after the other. The Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is also involved in a sexual assault controversy after he also publicly supported another Cowboys player Josh Brent, who has now returned to the team following a his arrest two years ago in a drunken-driving crash that killed a teammate.
Now, the team is supporting Spillman wherein their coach Jason Garrett said that the player will remain active not until he is arrested or charged in a police investigation into his role in an alleged assault last month at a suburban Dallas hotel.
Garrett said "We've been very clear with our team about consequences that there will be if there is a situation where charges or arrests are made for a crime. That doesn't apply in this particular case."
Brent was convicted of intoxication manslaughter early this year after the 2012 incident which killed team mate practice squad player Jerry Brown. He was sentenced to 180 days of jail time. On the NFL side, he was suspended for 10 games and was allowed to rejoin his teammates for limited work at the practice facility two weeks earlier than sanctioned.
According to tight end Jason Witten "I think they're two separate situations. Josh, he did serve his time. I think with C.J., we just don't know enough. But as I said before, the expectations and standards for us are high and it needs to be high."
According to Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Eberling, no further information has been released as the investigation is still ongoing. Spillman team mates knew of the situation that he is in but refuses to comment on it.
Garrett said "He'll take part in everything with our football team at this time unless the circumstances change. You have to be careful with just accusations and allegations in this situation. When someone is officially charged or arrested for something, that's when it becomes a different situation in our minds."
