It was the first game that David Blatt coached for the NBA. That is why the game was very important for the Cleveland Cavaliers Coach.
Blatt compared his first game as somewhat like a one on one matchup in the backyard. He said "'If you've got a brother and you go to play outside, you're dying to beat him. But if you do, you feel (bad). There was no way to really win that game."
Star player, LeBron James played during the first half of the tournament and was able to accumulate 12 points for the team before resting in the second half. After that, the rest of the team work hand in hand to give Blatt an emotional win against his former team, Maccabi Tel Aviv, 107-80 on Sunday night.
Blatt had coached Maccabi for six seasons and had helped the team to several championships. That is why the matchup was emotional for him, He said "'I was nervous before the game, but not because it was the first time I coached in the NBA. I was playing against my friends."
Even James felt the emotions that Blatt is going through.
He said "'He was very nervous, excited, uptight - and rightfully so. He has a lot of ties to that team, a lot of ties to that community, that city, that country and his first real game is against his former team. So I don't know how much he slept last night."
James rested during the rest of the second half after talking with his coach about his aching back. He even seated out of the practice last Friday.
On the other hand, Kyrie Irving added 16 points and Kevin Love 11 rebounds for the Cavs, who held a 64-36 rebounding advantage. For the Maccabi team, Sylvan Landesberg scored 23 and Jeremy Pargo 18.
Pargo commented about Blatt being the new coach of the Cavs saying "He doesn't look at you like coach to player or you are beneath him. He looks at you as a man and he talks to you. That's one of the greatest things about him. And from a coaching standpoint, he has ways of managing personalities and managing games. He's unbelievable. He'll be very successful in the situation he's in."
