A whale washed ashore on Long Island on Thursday.
The whale was dead as it was spotted at Smith Point Beach in Suffolk County, in Riverhead, N.Y.
An animal rescue group told PIX11 that the dead whale was spotted before noon on Thursday. According to the Riverhead Foundation, which is a nonprofit group that rescues and rehabilitates marine mammals in N.Y., noticed it was dead when they arrived.
The group thinks it may be a Finback whale, about 40 to 50 feet long, and that the creature had been dead for a while before it washed ashore, according to what the group told the news outlet.
There was a finback whale spotted 30 miles off of Jones Beach, according to what the group said. They are unsure if it is the same whale spotted on Monday that washed up on Thursday.
A necropsy is scheduled to be performed Friday to determine how the whale died.
