"Focus" movie news hints at an unlikely chemistry between Will Smith and Margot Robbie, which has been likened to Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in "Crazy, Stupid Love." Will this be redemption for Jada Pinkett-Smith's husband whose star has seemingly lost luster in recent years?
The "Focus" movie news revealed the release date as February 27, 2015 in US threaters and the studio also circulated the official trailer for the film, which is helmed by "Crazy, Stupid, Love" duo John Requa and Glenn Ficarra.
"'Focus' centers on a veteran grifter (Smith) who takes a young, attractive woman (Robbie) under his wing, but things get complicated when they become romantically involved," Rope of Silicon said.
John Requa dished "Focus" movie news to USA Today when he said that they had a problem finding the lady co-star for Will Smith.
"Will said, 'You're going to have trouble finding a girl because I kind of have a large personality.' And he was right but Margot walked in and just put everybody on their heels," he said. "When she walked out of the room, Will turned to us and said, 'Mmhm.'"
"It was the same moment we had with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling when they first read together," adds Ficarra. "Here's Ryan Gosling, this very desirable male 'hubba hubba' dude. And Emma just came in and owned him," the director added.
According to the "Focus" movie synopsis "Will Smith stars as Nicky, a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes romantically involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie). As he's teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame --now an accomplished femme fatale -- shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky's latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop ... and the consummate con man off his game."
Most pundits believed that the "Focus" movie would be Will Smith's redemption after "After Earth," co-starring with son Jaden Smith, that flopped at the box office.
Will Smith had told Digital Spy that he's moving out of the Summer Blockbuster genre for a while.
"It's been an absolute necessity that the movie be a blockbuster, but I think I'm going to start moving out of that and finding more danger in my artistic choices," he said.
