Serena Williams' injury has not affected her WTA rankings for now as talks have been going around that the multiple grand slam winner should consider retirement from the sport.

According to DNA India, Serena Williams' injury has not been a hindrance for her to hold the top position in the ranks.

"Williams was forced to abandon her defence of the China Open earlier this month due to the injury, with second-ranking Maria Sharapova going on to win the tournament," it said.

However, Maria Sharapova still have to catch around 2,000 points to overthrow the American from the top of the ranks.

The rest of the WTA top 10 women's tennis players are Simona Halep at third, Petra Kvitova at fourth place, Li Na at fifth. Agnieszka Radwanska, Eugenie Bouchard, Ana Ivanovic, Caroline Wozniacki and

Angelique Kerber round up the list.

Meanwhile, Harry Wall wrote for Give Me Sport that in light of the latest Serena Williams injury, the American tennis champ should consider retirement.

While Serena Williams has managed to hold on to the top position, trying to dislodge Steffi Graf in the all-time list is a tall order since the 33-year-old needs another 167 weeks to do that.

He said even with the natural athletic ability of Serena Williams as well as the "lack of consistent challengers," it's unlikely that she will able to achieve that feat. After winning 18 Grand Slam singles titles along with 13 Grand Slam doubles titles-teaming up with sister Venus Williams-as well as mixed doubles Grand Slam title, Serena Williams has no more to prove.

"Injuries and illness have effected the world no.1 throughout this year, contributing to disappointing showings at all the majors apart from Flushing Meadows. As Serena dips further into her thirties, such issues are only likely to become more commonplace one would expect," he said.

"Not now, but maybe soon, Serena should have some reflection and maybe question why she continues to put herself under strain," Give Me Sport added.
