It looks like Miguel Cotto's next fight would be against Canelo Alvarez, as Freddie Roach is still clamoring for his boxer to face the former light middleweight champion. Bob Arum, on the other hand, is looking to make things happen, as he is reported to be in negotiations to make the said fight happen.
While Miguel Cotto's next fight has yet to have a final schedule, his trainer Freddie Roach revealed that Canelo Alvarez is still their top priority for the coming year. As both men opted to sit out the rest of 2014, Roach, for his part, wants either Alvarez, and if the opportunity presents itself, a match-up against either Gennady Golovkin or Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"I think Canelo Alvarez is obviously our number-one choice, and then I would love to go fight Triple G [Gennady Golovkin] after we win that fight," Roach said in a report by Ring TV. "Of course there's [Floyd] Mayweather out there, he's ducking Manny but he beat Cotto once and I don't know if he wants to fight us but that's a pretty interesting fight for me."
Miguel Cotto's next fight will likely be the product of the "cold war" truce between Bob Arum's Top Rank Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. But whatever happens, Roach, who spoke in Cotto's behalf, wants a top opponent to defend their title against.
But for the famed trainer sees a title fight against Genandy Golovkin as a more definite possibility.
"I would like one fight before that [facing Golovkin]," he said. "Obviously we do have a 160-pound title we have to defend and I think he's the perfect opponent for us. Maybe the two best fighters in the world."
However, Bob Arum is looking at Alvarez for Miguel Cotto's next fight, as the 82-year old head honcho of Top Rank announced that negotiations for the said match-up are already ongoing. But he also pointed out the Gennady Golovkin is also in the picture.
"Yeah, that's what we're trying to do," Arum said in an interview with Fight Hub. "Have Cotto and Canelo fight, and Gennady is right there, probably could fight the winner."
