It seems like training for next month's New York Marathon gave Caroline Wozniacki the edge to win against strong competitor Maria Sharapova.
The match between both players ended in a three set match where in Wozniacki won 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-2 to beat Sharapova for the second-straight time.
The result of the match greatly hurt Sharapova chances of getting the year-end No 1 ranking. According to Wozniacki "I just feel like right now with all the training and running I've been doing I can keep being out there and keep running. I kept thinking to myself out there in the third set, 'If you're going to get tired now, how are you going to get through this marathon? You better keep going." But even if her training for the marathon greatly helped her in her games, she said that the marathon is just a onetime affair and that she does not recommend it to other players.
She said "To do it year in and year out, I don't think it's possible. Our bodies get a beating already. I don't think it's necessary to do this again while I'm on tour." But aside from the game against Sharapova, the rest of the match was smooth sailing for Wozniacki. She faced Agnieszka Radwanska and had a comfortable 6-2, and a 6-3 win over Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.
On the other hand, Sharapova was frustrated of the results of the match. She said "It's happened the last couple of times I played against her. The chances that you have when you're serving for a set, it's in your hands to finish that off."When you give those chances back, a player that's top 10 in the world and has the experience as Caroline does, you're not just going to run away with the match."
The losses by Sharapova and Kvitova have thrown the White Group wide open, with Radwanska's convincing victory highlighting her title credentials. Radwanska said "I feel much better than last year at the championships. I haven't played many matches in the past two weeks, which has helped. I've learnt my lessons from past years about how to play at my best."
