Which Samsung smartphone is worth the purchase? We compare the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Alpha to see which device is better.

For the design and display, the Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with only 0.32 inches in thickness and a weight of 145 grams, while the Galaxy Alpha is 115 grams and is only 0.26 inches in thickness. The Galaxy S5 comes with a matte finish on its body and a perforated plastic back cover, while the Galaxy Alpha has a premium-looking design which features a metallic frame and on the back, there is a cross-stitch pattern which replaced the perforated model of the S5.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 features a 5.1 inch display that uses the Super AMOLED technology at a 1080 x 1920 resolution and its pixel density is at 432 ppi. The Galaxy Alpha on the other has a lower 312 ppi pixel density and also a lower resolution of 720 x 1280. The display is smaller at 4.7 inches.

For the hardware and OS, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 Krait 400 quad core processor that has a clock speed of 2.5 GHz. For the Galaxy Alpha, Samsung has opted for the octa core processing unit branded Exynos 5. The Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A7 cores come with clock speeds of 1.8 GHz and 1.3 GHz respectively. The RAM capacity is the same, 2 GB. As for the internal storage capacity, the Galaxy Alpha features 32 GB. The S5 also has a 32 GB version, which also comes in a 16 GB version and has support for microSD which means users can add up to 128 GB of storage. Both devices feature fingerprint scanners which can be used for unlocking the device and also making payments via mobile. They both also rely on the Android KitKat OS from Google, which the latest out until Android 5.0 Lollipop is released.

In terms of battery and camera specs, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a 2800 mAh battery unit, which is way ahead of the one featured inside the Galaxy Alpha. The 16 MP camera of the Galaxy S5 remains on top, as the smartphone only has 12 MP for its rear lens. The Alpha has the better front facing lens, however, at 2.1 MP, while the S5 only has 2 MP for the secondary camera. Both smartphones come with LED flash and 4k video recording capabilities.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha cost about $653 on Amazon.com, while the Galaxy S5 is around $508.
