Nonito Donaire's next fight may be back down at super bantamweight and in a regional fight in his home country of the Philippines, according to journalist Ronnie Nathanielsz. He also reports that the five-division world champion is slated to make a comeback in May 2015.

Nathanielsz, who is a veteran broadcaster based in the Philippines, believes that Nonito Donaire's next fight will likely be back at 122-pounds, a division "The Filipino Flash" lorded over for the entirety of 2012. Nathanielsz also believes that Donaire's next bout will be a regional event in the Philippines.

"Hopefully, he's gonna fight his next fight in Manila, as a super bantamweight, for a regional title," Nathanielsz told Philippine media outlet ABS-CBN News.

Nathanielsz's reason for broaching the idea of Nonito Donaire's next fight being a regional show in the Philippines was to give the former champion an opportunity to bounce back and "test the waters" after a disappointing knockout loss to hard-hitting Nicholas Walters of Jamaica, two weeks ago.

"Can he make 122 (pounds) easily? Because Nonito always has problems trimming down," Nathanielsz explained. "He kind of loses weight in the last four or five days, and then he looks thin and wane when he steps on the scale."

"So he needs to take a fight at 122," he added. "A regional belt will be fine, and then see how he fares there and then begin his quest for another title at 122."

Donaire, who had put on dominant performances in the past, was badly beaten by Walters in their last fight. As "The Filipino Flash" takes the rest of the year off to recuperate from his injuries, Nathanielsz revealed that the 31-year old boxer will likely make a comeback in May 2015.

"Two dates have been given to him - May 2 and May 16," Nathanielsz said. "It's his choice, because he cannot fight in March. They have to put him in May, because that's the only time the two cuts (above his eyes) will heal."
