Which Motorola device is the better choice for consumers? We pit the Moto G against the Moto X2 to see which device is better.

In terms of design and display, both Motorola devices are pretty much alike, sharing the same curved body shape, with the rear camera in the center and the M logo below it. But, the Moto G has a rubberized cover, while the Moto X2 has a top class chassis with a matte-finish metal frame surrounding it. Both devices are using Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to protect their screens and in addition, the Moto X2 is water resistant.

The Moto G is using an IPS LCD display of 4.5 inches, which renders a resolution of 720x1280pixels with 326ppi, while the Moto X2 has a AMOLED display that measures 5.2 inches and supports 1080x1920pixels and 424ppi.

The Moto G weighs 143 grams and it’s thicker, having these physical sizes: 129.9×65.9×11.6 mm. The Moto X2 on the other hand, is only 1 gram heavier and measures 140.8×72.4x10 mm.

In terms of hardware and OS, the Moto G has Cortex A7 with four cores clocked at 1.2GHz, which is based on a Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 chipset. It uses Adreno 305 graphics, accompanied by 1GB of RAM and runs on Android v4.3 (Jelly Bean), but it’s upgradable to v4.4.4 (KitKat) and now it’s waiting the 5.0 (Lollipop) update. However, it has limited internal storage, having two options: 8 or 16GB.

The Moto X2 is powered by a more powerful quad core 2.5GHz Krait 400 processor which sits on a Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset along with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Its internal memory is also unexpandable and comes in variants of 16 and 32GB. It came preloaded with a newer Android version, v4.4.4 (KitKat), but likewise the Moto G, it will be upgraded to Android L.

For battery and camera specs, both Motorola devices have batteries slightly above 2000mAh. Moto G has a 2070 mAh battery and it’s non-removable, while the Moto X2 comes with a 2300 mAh battery which can be replaced.

The rear camera on the Moto G is at 5MP, being helped by the features that the phone comes with: LED flash, autofocus, HDR, panorama, face detection, touch focus and geo tagging. However, the front camera is very poor at 1.3MP.

The Moto X2 took a huge step and increased the number of pixels up to 13MP on the rear camera. Motorola equipped the device with a dual-LED flash and used other known features as well. The front camera is now 2MP.

The 8GB variant of the Moto G costs $160, while the Moto X2 can be purchased through Verizon with a two-year contract costing $50, while the carrier free model costs around $500.
