Variety reported that the low budget horror flick outshined "Nightcrawler" with an impressive $10.7M opening weekend in the US.
"Its status was in doubt, given that initial estimates had a virtual tie between "Ouija" and 'Nightcrawler.' Both films' early projections were a little high, as each reported doing $10.9 million at the holiday box office," the article read.
'Nightcrawler' was just shy of those numbers, pulling in $10.4 million from 2,766 locations. The film follows am ethically compromised crime scene videographer (Jake Gyllenhaal) in his relentless quest for 'if it bleeds, it leads' stories. Open Road picked up the $8.5 million production out of the Cannes Film Festival."

The horror flick proved to be a feat for Universal and producer Jason Blum. With just a $5M production budget, the movie has now made roughly five times more, racking $34.8M in total domestic sales since it debuted on the big screen.
