Assassin’s Creed Unity Review: Raves For Graphic Detail, But Gameplay Suffers At 30fps; Ubisoft’s New Game A Dud For The Franchise, In Storytelling And Pacing?

It's unanimous: the Assassin's Creed Unity review is a lukewarm rave for Ubisoft's latest release for the franchise.

With Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Rogue release dates within this week and the next, gamers and critics finally test if the games live up to expectations. Visually, the game doesn't disappoint.

The consensus for the Assassin's Creed Unity review praises the game's visual detail, taking advantage of the new consoles' hardware capabilities. One of the franchise's trademarks involve the sweeping vistas of a world you're about to explore, and the painstaking detail the developers put into every nook and cranny stays true to the Assassin's Creed tradition.

Assassin's Creed Unity's gameplay suffers in the pacing, though. 30 fps is also very noticeable for a next-gen game, especially when there's plenty of moving elements in a scene.

This is a primary complaint of initial reviews; the eye candy in graphics is defeated in the heat of battle or during scenes "overpopulated" with elements.

"The argument that 60fps gameplay is objectively better and more pleasing on the eyes is ever-more apparent with Unity's release. Compared to other titles which are capable of running at higher framerates, the visual motion looks clunky and sloppy. The details of a huge dive off of a Versailles cathedral as your assassin falls toward the ground while the city streets inch ever closer is lost with the reduction." (twinfinite.net)

Notable in Assassin's Creed Unity review is the game's departure from the time-traveling angle. The story is grounded to the era French revolution, which may be awkward to fans of the series. The narrative could also benefit from better retelling. Other reviews consider Unity the worst installment in the series:

"If you were expecting something unique from Unity, prepare for disappointment. Here's the synopsis, spoilers free (but let's be real, we know this story already): Generic guy who is generally suave yet an unremarkable rebel gets wrapped up in a conspiracy that leads him to become an assassin and commence with the stabby-stab-stab."

Assassin's Creed Unity and Rogue are out on the PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and on the PC.
