Cleveland Cavaliers player Lebron James reportedly broke royal protocol by putting his arm around Kate Middleton's shoulders, as the game against the Brooklyn nets was packed with royalty.
On Monday night, the two-time MVP even had his photo taken with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and posting the image on his Instagram. He wrote: "This very moment will be forever remembered and put up in my house. It's all good and smiles on this side. #Royalty #StriveForGreatNess #RWTW #LRMR #Klutch."
However, The Telegraph didn't take too kindly of Lebron James getting too chummy with Kate Middleton as the British publication claimed that the Cleveland Cavaliers player broke royal protocol.
"While posing for photographs, LeBron James appeared to surprise the Duchess of Cambridge by breaking royal protocol and placing his arm around her," it said. "The breach of protocol echoed the time when Michelle Obama caused a stir by putting her arm around the Queen in 2009."
But according to the NY Daily News, the official website of the British Monarchy pointed out that "there are no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting The Queen or a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms. For men this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy. Other people prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way."
However, the royal protocol suggested that anyone is not permitted to touch or kiss members of the royal family.
Meanwhile, basketball fans watched royalties as forward Lebron James and the rest of the Cleveland Cavaliers trumped the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center. Aside from Prince William and Kate Middleton, there's also music royalty in the presence of Jay Z and wife Beyonce.
"The game was a sideshow to the real event - the Duke and Duchess's meeting America's royal couple of music, Beyoncé and husband Jay Z," said People. "And if that weren't enough, the game's undisputed star player was none other than the Cavaliers' LeBron James, a.k.a. 'King James.'"
