Which of these smartphones is the better buy? We compare the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC Desire Eye to see which one is worth the purchase.
In terms of design and display, the HTC Desire Eye has a plastic construction with a two-tone design meaning that it has either white or dark blue on its back and the frame is red/light blue. The device feels solid as it has an average thickness, featuring a flat back with curved edges and corner. The rear camera sits in the upper left and the HTC logo has the same color as the frame. It weighs 154 grams, measures 151.7×73.8×8.5 mm and it’s IPX7 certified, meaning that it’s resistant to dust and water.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 on the other hand, has the same level of protection, but it obtained a different certification, IP67. The back is made of polycarbonate material, with a rubberized effect and perforated dots. The device is a bit thinner and lighter, but that’s because is shorter, measuring 142×72.5×8.1 mm, and weighs only 145 grams.
Forthe hardware and specs, the HTC Desire Eye is similar to the One M8, and it matches even Samsung’s Galaxy S5, but it offers a slightly weaker performance because its processor has a lower clock speed. Both smartphones are powered by a quad core Krait 400 processor, clocked at 2.3Ghz on the Desire Eye, and with a clock speed of 2.5Ghz on the Galaxy S5. Both device are also use a Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset, Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM. Both devices will allow users to expand its capacity up to 128GB and they come with a variant of 16GB. However, the Samsung device offers another variant of 32GB.
Android launched the 4.4.2 (KitKat) update for the Samsung device, while the HTC device came loaded with v4.4.4 (KitKat).
In terms of battery and camers specs, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a battery of 2800mAh, which can be replaced in time, but it can support up to 21 hours of talking time. The HTC Desire Eye has a non-removable battery, but its capacity is 2400mAh and a talking time of 20 hours.
The Samsung Galaxy S5’s rear camera has a higher resolution (16MP) and some would say that it’s better than the HTC Desire Eye’s 13MP, but don’t forget that HTC brought the “eye” experience, which consists of: face tracking, face fusion, split capture, crop me in, live make-up. The HTC handset has a 13MP front camera, and is equipped with dual-LED flash. The Samsung device has a 2MP front snapper.
The HTC Desire Eye cost $800 in the Indian market, while the Samsung Galaxy S5 16GB costs $520 on Amazon.com.
