A Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight date is finally set; Mayweather wants it on May 2.
After months of taunting, the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight date is set on May 2. Floyd Mayweather finally commits to a match with the Pacman in a Showtime interview.
Mayweather threw the challenge at Pacquiao Friday night, confirming that he's finally agreeing to a match with a set date.
"We are ready. Let's make it happen. May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. Let's do it."
The proposed match has boxing fans going since 2009, but the negotiations remained tentative with both the Pacquiao and Mayweather camps having issues with the terms. Progress in 2010 ultimately fell apart with a snag in drug-testing protocol.
Manny Pacquiao and promoter Bob Arum stirred the pot late November, before the decisive match with Chris Algieri. The Pacman went on a verbal campaign to force Mayweather's hand, notably in an appearance in a Foot Locker commercial. Friday is the first of Mayweather's affirmation in a long time.
"I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao. We tried to make the fight happen years ago; we had problems with random blood and urine testing. I just want to be on an even playing field. Now he's in a very, very tight situation. He's lost to [Juan Manuel] Marquez [in 2012], he's lost to [Timothy] Bradley [by controversial decision in 2012 but avenged it in April]. Pay-per-view numbers are extremely low. He's desperate. I wanted that fight a long time ago. I'm just waiting on them."
The Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight date, should it push through, is expected to earn both boxers their richest purse to date. Mayweather has other motivations for agreeing to the matchup, though.
"I know that he's not on my level. The fans would love to see the fight. And, of course, I want to go out with a bang."
May 2, 2015 is also set with a matchup between middleweight champ Miguel Cotto and previous junior middleweight champ Canelo Alvarez (espn.go.com).
