Gemma Atkinson's career credits could include a running TV role as Supergirl; the "Hollyoaks" star is reportedly considered for the part in the upcoming CBS Show. Though superhero movies and TV shows have taken root in pop culture, TV has yet to see anew female lead in the genre.
The last-known TV show to be fronted by a female actor was "Birds of Prey" back in 2002, and it didn't last long. Greg Berlanti is set to helm a new run for the Supergirl TV show, and recent reports could bump Gemma Atkinson's career in the titular role.
British tabloid The Sun reports Atkinson is waiting for confirmation for the role; it turns out she recently auditioned for the part, and is a comic book fan to boot. Atkinson isn't the only actor rumored to lead the show; Claire Holt of "The Vampire Diaries" stepped out of the running, with her hands full doing "The Originals" and the upcoming "Aquarius."
The Sun also reports Atkinson is in similar talks for a part in "Emmerdale," an ongoing UK soap opera.
"Gemma is a huge fan of comic books so this is something she'd jump at. It will make her huge Stateside. She said next year will be her best yet whatever happens. If she gets Supergirl it will be amazing or if she begins working on Emmerdale that will be great too."
The Supergirl role could be a break in Gemma Atkinson's career in the US. If she's confirmed, it's expected the role will put her in the same league as Michelle Ryan, who was also a soap opera star before she caught a break as The Bionic Woman in the US TV adaptation.
Gemma Atkinson's career nabbed its latest break in a part at the medical drama "Casualty." Her film credits are considerably low-key, with roles in "Devil's Pass" and "Night of the Living Dead 3D." (cinemablend.com)
