The trailer for "Jem and the Holograms" movie is released giving fans first look on a social media spin of the 1980s cartoon.
The first trailer for "Jem and the Holograms" was released Monday, May 11, and as expected, Universal/Comcast Corp. waited until the debut weekend of "Pitch Perfect 2" for the event.
The first trailer for the much-anticipated movie offers 2 1/2-minute look at Jon M. Chu's live-action adaption of the 1980s animated series, Los Angeles Times noted.
Starring Aubrey Peeples as Jerrica, the film centers on a shy teen living with her aunt (Molly Ringwald), sister (Stefanie Scott) and foster siblings (Hayley Kiyoko and Aurora Perrineau).
In the teaser Peeples say, "I'm living the most unexceptional life."
She adds that at some point we wish we could be someone else. Apparently that opportunity could come sooner rather than later. Just a simple music video upload to YouTube makes Peeples and her family girl group an Internet sensation. The sisters' sound and look is changed right away after the world's biggest record company signs the band.
"I can guarantee you that there's going to be a lot of pink," Peeples recently teased to E! News. She added that nobody will be disappointed with the hair, makeup and the fashion. "We had a lot of different performance looks," Peeples said noting that each look was truly outrageous.
The 21-year-old actress, singer said that looking at pictures she couldn't even believe it's her. "It's so weird," she added.
The girls are told that stardom will require them to change the way they act, sound and even look. The group goes through some major downsides along with experiencing some positives with their styles, hits on the radio and autograph requests from numerous fans.
The "Jem and the Holograms" movie trailer's focus is on realness vs. presentation, however it's a bit ironic considering that "Jem" looks to somewhat get away from its source material. Considering that the original cartoon was outlandish in several ways, Jerrica's alter ego was switched on high-tech earrings equipped with micro-projectors, for example.
That said, the remake does raise an important question: What's the point of changing something only to eliminate its signature elements?
"Jem and the Holograms" is set for release on Oct. 23, 2015 from Universal Pictures.
