Despite the rumors that they are dating, Serena Williams has not dropped coach Patrick Mouratoglou and it proved to be the best decision as shown by her recent French Open domination, grabbing her 20th grand slam title in the process.
According to The Guardian said their union was almost serendipitous. The no. 1 tennis women's champ was not winning anything for a couple of years, and nobody knew her rumored boyfriend Patrick Mouratoglou then.
"It is three years now since Serena Williams picked up the phone and called Patrick Mouratoglou, then a relatively little-known coach, to ask if she could use the facilities at his academy on the outskirts of Paris," it said. "It turned out to be a masterstroke."
Talking about her player-coach relationship with Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena Williams said that they are honest with each other even if sometimes the truth hurts.
"We talk before the match and we have a good plan," she said.
"I was unhappy in the beginning of the week and I told him 'listen, this isn't working, we need to change something'," she said during her French Open matches. "We have that relationship where I can tell him 'Look, this isn't great' and it kind of goes back and forth. I think it's a pretty good record. We want to get more than seven."
California's CBC noted that Serena Williams and rumored boyfriend Patrick Mouratoglou are poised to make history because only two women stand before the no. 1 tennis champ in the history books.
The first is Margaret Smith Court who won 24 grand slam titles and Steffi Graf with 22.
"When I was a little girl, in California, my father and my mother wanted me to play tennis. And now I'm here, with 20 Grand Slam titles," she said right after winning at Roland Garros. "This is very special for me. I haven't always played very well here, but I'm really happy to win the 20th here."
