So Ji Sub will release a new hip-hop track this week.
Long before the 37-year-old actor ever appeared in a drama he wanted to be a rapper. And he might never have become an actor if it was not for his interest in hip-hop. His first modeling assignment was posing along hip-hop artist Kim Sung Jae.
"I was never really interested in becoming a celebrity," So said in a 2012 interview with the Korea Herald. "My life was all about swimming and hip-hop music. I did modeling because I wanted to see Kim and also because it was the best way to earn good easy money."
And since he took that modeling assignment he has succeeded as an actor and released a few hip-hop songs. According to his agency 51K, the actor will release his latest hip-hop album on midnight July 21.
"So Ji Sub will be releasing a new hip-hop track through various music sites on July 22," said the 51K representative.
He also shot a music video for the album on July 15.
On his new album he worked with the rap trio Soul Dive. The hip-hop trio consisting of Nuck, Zito and DTheo, made their debut in 2009 with the album "Mad Scientist & Sweet Monsters."
His last release "18 Years" was also done in collaboration with Soul Dive in June 2014. He started releasing music in 2009. Rapping under the name G, he contributed the tracks, "Lonely Life" and "Foolish Love" to the "Rough Cut" and "Cain and Abel" soundtracks. In 2011 he released the single "Pick Up Line" under his own name. In January 2013 he released another rap mini album "6PM...Ground," which also featured Younha. Four songs from the album were combined to make a 12-minute music drama. Park Shin Hye and Yoo Seung Ho starred in the music videos.
His new release will be the fifth in the last five years. And since he is having fun, there will probably be more.
"Producing music is fun," he said at the press conference for his last drama "The Master's Sun." "Performing on stage is fun as well."
Now that he has his latest release out of the way he can focus on his upcoming drama. He will make his drama comeback in "Oh My God" with co-star Shin Min Ah. In that drama the co-stars play two old friends who embark on a diet together. It has been two years since the actor appeared on the small screen in "The Master's Sun."
