Buffalo Bills released Fred Jackson from their team last Monday by putting an end to his 9-year career with the team. At the age of 34, Fred Jackson entered the training camp as the NFL's oldest running back, led the Buffalo Bills in rushing last season.
Fred Jackson served as a team captain and remained favourite of every Buffalo Bills fans. After Thurman Thomas and O.J. Simpson, Fred Jackson was the franchise's third-leading rusher.
In an official statement, Buffalo Bills General Manager Doug Whaley said that on Monday they had to take the difficult decision to release Fred Jackson from their team. "He had an incredible career for this organization for the past 10 years," Doug Whaley added.
Doug Whaley thanked Fred Jackson for all his hard work that he has bestowed upon the team. Whaley even admired Fred's leadership skills which he applied during his tenure with the Buffalo Bills. "Fred and his family have been dedicated to this community, and we can't thank them enough for their contributions through his career."
In a statement to ESPN, Doug said that releasing Fred was a difficult decision but they cannot announce the reasons publicly for competitive reasons. The player on the other hand, offered a farewell to all the Buffalo Bills fans via Twitter.
Fred Jackson missed out the training camp for two weeks with a hamstring injury, but returned to practice earlier last week. At Buffalo Bills' preseason victory over the Pittsburg Steelers, the captain ran for a 41-yard gain on his first carry and then scored on a 1-yard touchdown.
This September 13, Buffalo Bills are playing against Indianapolis Colts, and Fred Jackson's release leaves the team with a weak backfield. After releasing Fred Jackson, Buffalo Bills will save about $2.5 million off their 2015 salary cap. This has many thinking that release of Fred Jackson has something to do with the savings on money.
