For a while it looked as if "Goodbye Mr. Black" was gone for good. The drama starring Lee Jin Wook and Moon Chae Won did not have an air date. SBS optioned the drama then dropped it from the schedule when the station decided to follow "The Village - Achiara's Secret" with the drama "Remember."
Fortunately, MBC opted to include the drama in its winter line-up. "Goodbye Mr. Black" is now scheduled to air in early 2016 as a Wednesday-Thursday drama.
"Goodbye Mr. Black" is based on the comic of the same name, written in the 1980s by Hwang Mi Na. The comic was inspired by the Alexandre Dumas novel "The Count of Monte Cristo," making it the second Dumas-inspired drama that Lee Jin Wook was cast in. He appeared in the 2014 drama "The Three Musketeers," which was set in Joseon-era Korea.
Lee Jin Wook's character in "Goodbye Mr. Black" is Cha Ji Won a Navy Special Operations Force officer. The charming and likable Cha is betrayed by a friend and is exiled to Australia, losing everything he worked for. He wants revenge. He enters into a fake marriage with Swan, played by Moon Chae Won, to create a new false identity. Then he returns to Korea to plot his revenge. Wil the pleasure of enacting revenge outweigh the pain that his plot inflicts on the innocent? Proabably not. Revenge is less sweet than bittersweet. Moon Chae Won's character will help him learn that lesson.
Lee Jin Wook was last seen in the dramas "The Time I Loved You, 7,000 Days" and "Nine: Nine Time Travels." Moon Chae Won was last seen on the small screen in "The Good Doctor" with Joo Won. She also appeared in the film "Love Forecast" with Lee Seung Gi.
The drama also stars Song Jae Rim and Kim Kang Woo.
Lee Chang Min, who directed "Midas" and "Birth of a Beauty," will direct the drama. Moon Hee Jung, who wrote the dramas "I hear Your Voice" and "Missing You," will write the screenplay. As the original manhwa was set in Autralia and England, it is rumored that many scenes in the drama will be filmed in those countries.
