CBS, an American commercial broadcast television and radio network, has confirmed the release of the 'Star Trek' Series in January, 2017 according to BBC News. The outer space adventure TV series is making a comeback to the television after almost a decade.
It would begin with a 'special preview' episode on the CBS network and later on, episodes would be shown on CBS All Access site, which a subscription video site of CBS, quoted The New York Times. The TV series is also expected to be distributed around the world by CBS Studios International.
According to Hollywoodreporter, Marc DeBevoise, executive VP and GM at CBS Digital Media explained why the series will be aired through CBS All Access.He said that CBS All Access has helped to increase CBS's growth opportunities across affiliates and services and Star Trek will help CBS grow manifold with its dedicated fan base, as they will be able to stream the local network live. Currently, the cross-platform streaming service, CBS All Access, is available for $5.99 per month.
CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves also explained the decision behind Star Trek to be shown on CBS All Access: "Star Trek is a family jewel; it's an important piece of business for us as we go forward," Moonves said, reported Hollywoodreporter.com.
He said ,"We're looking to do original content on All Access and build up that platform. All Access will put out original content and knowing the loyalty of Star Trek fans, this will boost it. There's about a billion channels out there and because of Star Trek, people will know what All Access is about."
CBS has decided to release the Star Trek series on its 50th Anniversary for its devoted and passionate fan base. The series will be produced by Alex Kurtzman, who is the writer and producer of 2009 "Star Trek" movie and its sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness", released in 2013.
CBS also gave a sneak peek into the characters and storyline of the upcoming series. The new series will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.
