"Terminator Genisys" will have a sequel although the original release schedule for 2017 might not happen.
According to Dana Goldberg, Skydance creative officer, in an interview with TheWrap during the 6th Annual Media Leadership Conference, the sequel is in the pipeline.
But there's going to be a lot of work to be done pre-production in terms of market research as they learned their lesson on the "Terminator Genisys" which had a poor showing in the domestic market.
She said they will conduct "a worldwide study and really talk to audiences about what they loved, and what maybe didn't work for them, so that the next we take with the franchise is the right one."
But that means the "Terminatory Genisys" sequel won't be released in 2017, and production will probably happen in the second half of that year, "because again, it would be silly to not have to worry about what audiences have to say."
Dana Goldberg said the sequel is not on hold, although they are "re-adjusting."
"We're ultimately happy with overall worldwide numbers. Do I wish we would have done better domestically? Absolutely."
"Happily, we live in the world where the domestic number had a level of importance 10 or 15 years ago - I'm not saying it's not important, it is - but we have to play to a worldwide market," she said.
But if there's going to be a "Terminator Genisys" sequel in 2017, might the producers foray into TV at least?
"At Skydance, when we talk movies, we talk universes, even more than franchises," she added. "So the idea of a 'Terminator' TV show fits into that universe. All the steps have to be taken in unison."
Dana Goldberg, however, did not address whether Emilia Clarke will be coming back to reprise her role as Sarah Connor in "Terminator Genisys" sequel, amind rumors that the "Game of Thrones" actress was blamed for the box-office showing of the film.
