Justin Theroux might want to extend "The Leftovers" up to the third season, but whether the HBO series might be cancelled or renewed is still up in the air.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Justin Theroux said that he would love if "The Leftovers" would be renewed for a third season, even as the ratings for the second season leave something to be desired.
"I do, of course. I would love it to, and I think it definitely could. It's a question of whether people respond to it," he said of "The Leftovers" possibly getting renewed. "I definitely think that there's other areas to explore. I don't know what they are - it's up to Damon and Tom."
He continued, "But I think they're very smart about only wanting to continue anything if there's a reason for it. It's about knowing what's the best last stroke to leave on the painting. When do you want have it stand alone, just being itself? And that's their decision to make."
"The Leftovers" enjoyed the highest rating yet for the second season for its penultimate episode as it generated 861,000 total viewers or a 0.40 adults 18-49 category.
"Series highs, the numbers comfortably best the 0.32 rating and 696,000 viewership mark drawn by the previous week's episode," Headline Planetsaid. "Though the best of season two, the performance remains a far cry from what the show delivered throughout its first season. No season one episode drew fewer than 1.38 million total viewers."
The user-generated website has a positive feedback for "The Leftovers" season 2, but that doesn't really guarantee it's going to be renewed as it can easily be cancelled if the ratings won't improve.
