Korean moviegoers dropped down last month for the past seven years.
The biggest reason for last month's slump in Korean films is the lack of 10 million box office hits that were recorded almost every year. 'The Admiral: Roaring Current's from 2014, Veteran in 2015, 'A Taxi Driver' in 2017, and 'Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds' in 2018 has acquired more than 10 million-selling on its release. But this year of August, 'Exit' attracted 9.1 million people for its screening.
It was hard to find a medium-sized box office hit, with 'The Battle: Roar to Victory' barely surpassing the break-even point of 4.68 million to Korean Theaters according to its distributor. There was no midnight movie this summer. 'The Battle: Roar to Victory' ranked 2nd overall with 4.68 million people.
'The Battle: Roar to Victor' is a Korean-Japanese period action film that revolves around the Battle of Fengwudong that occurred in the 1920s battle of Korean Independence soldiers and Japanese forces in Manchuria.
"With the release of similar high-budget genre films in the peak season, the audience's fatigue has increased," the Korean Film Council said. "This is why the demand for 10 million gross has decreased in the second half of this year as many as those highest-grossing films were produced."
For foreign movies, 'Furious: Hobbes & Shaw' came in third place with a total of 3.33 million people. It is the only foreign currency that has mobilized more than 1 million people last month.
Meanwhile, the ratings these foreign movies acquitted also fell from 1.24 million to 6.81 million in August compared to the same period last year, and this has been its lowest since 2012. The total number of viewers who added foreign movies to Korean theaters also fell by 5.44 million from last year to 24.81 million, the lowest since 2013.
As a result, the total number of theater audiences combined with Korean films and foreign movies was a total of 2,481 million.
