Rapper Eminem and the K-pop group Girls' Generation were among the winners on the first YouTube Music Awards, Yahoo News reported.
The awards show seems like a direct competitor for the MTV Video Music Awards. However, it has a long way to go. It was directed by Spike Jonze. It was hosted by musician and actor Jason Schwartzman and musician Reggie Watts.
In terms of audience, more than 10 million viewers watched this year's MTV Video Music Award. According to Variety, only around 215,000 people were live-streaming the YouTube event at a given point. But this number will increase in the next days as the awards show billed it as "live music videos."
Girls' Generation won the Video of the Year while rapper Eminem was named Artist of the Year. He was the closing performance of the show. He performed his new song "Rap God."
Meanwhile, Eminem fans are all excited for the November 5 release of his new album. Eminem said to USA Today that he's excited to get his music out.
"I do get excited to make the music. Obviously, I'm not the type to say I'm so excited to hear my (profanity). Never been that kind of dude. But I am excited about making the music and I want people to hear it," Eminem said.
The album has 21 tracks that are described as experimental and wide-ranging. Most of his songs like his performances reveal a part of his life and are shocking and sometimes sweet.
"These are very personal topics - the same topics he's been talking about over these last 10 years or even longer," said Paul Rosenberg, Eminem's manager. "He's telling stories from a 40-year-old man's perspective now. When he started 15 years ago with these stories, topics he was in his 20s. Perspective changes. You've raised your own children, had your own successes and failures. One of the coolest things about this album are these themes he explores and looking at this same world totally differently."
It looks like Eminem's life is going smoothly especially now that he has a new album.
"I always try and have as much fun with it, performing, music, my career," Eminem said. "At the end of the day, I'm blessed that I'm able to do something I'm passionate about."
