YouTube has held its first ever music awards show last Nov. 3, 2013 and was streamed live from Pier 36 in New York City at 6 p.m. EST. And while the first YTMAs saw Eminem as big winner for the “Artist of the Year” award, the show has created quite a stir in the online world as it has been described both “weird” and “messy.”
From the technical problems to its hosts, Jason Schwartzman and Reggie Watts and the manner by which the awards were announced, the first YTMAs kept its promise to make things indeed “unconventional.”
According to Tube Filter, YouTube, director Spike Jonze, and producers Vice Media had envisioned to have a show promising, “anything can happen.”
“The whole night is supposed to feel like a YouTube video — the raw messiness of making stuff,” Spike Jonze was quoted as telling Mashable by Tube Filter.
He even issued a disclaimer that the audience will things that has never been done on any award show.
He said, “My disclaimer is that none of us have ever done this before. There’s bound to be a bit of a mess, hopefully in the best way, sometimes like YouTube videos are.”
As weird and unconventional the first YouTube Music Awards may have been, it created history in the music industry and it saw great artists and groups as its first set of winners.
