A few hours before "Youth of May" drops, the show released a four-minute highlight teaser to ramp up the excitement. Through this teaser, fans can see how the two main characters' romance would start.
'Youth of May' Drops Highlight Teaser
"Youth of May" is a melodrama about the romance between Hwang Hee Tae, played by the actor Lee Do Hyun and Kim Myung Hee, played by the "Alive" actress Go Min Si. Their relationship is set against the turbulent background of May 1980, with some claiming it coincides with a painful period in South Korean history in real life.
Featured in the teaser are the drama actors Lee Sang Yi and Geum Sae Rok as well. They play the roles of Lee Soo Chan and Lee Soo Ryun, respectively. In this show, they are siblings within a wealthy family. However, even though they technically grew up similarly - wealthy and able to get everything they want, they have very different goals in life.
The highlight teaser starts with Lee Soo Chan and Kim Myung Hee's sudden and surprising reunion. Upon sighting each other, both cannot contain their excitement. Both are obviously thrilled to see each other, and he sweetly instructs her to contact him if ever she needs help from him.

The clip then jumps to Kim Myung Hee being accepted to a university in Germany. However, she is not able to grab the life-changing opportunity, because she had to prioritize her family first. Her family is not well-off, and she's the only one who can take care of them. She can't even afford a plane ticket. However, hope is not lost because her friend Lee Soo Ryun comes up with a brilliant idea to get her some funds.
According to this friend, if Kim Myung Hee goes on a blind date on behalf of her, Soo Ryun would be shouldering the plane ticket for her. Naturally, this felt too good of an opportunity to just pass up. After all, what's hard about going on a blind date?
She did not know at the time, but Kim Myung Hee's life changed because of this blind date.
'Youth of May' Romance is Cute and Complicated
Because she went to that date, Hwang Hee Tae mistook her Kim Myung Hee as Lee Soo Ryun. Their chemistry was palpable, but how can the romance continue in a smooth way when it started already in a lie?
The teaser showed that eventually, the truth comes out. Instead of being turned off for good, Hwang Hee Tae still chases after Kim Myung Hee. This compelled Kim Myung Hee to list various reasons why he shouldn't be with her, such as being from a very less fortunate family and not being able to earn even her high school diploma. Compared to Hwang Hee Tae's privileged life, Kim Myung Hee cannot imagine why they would even be a good match, despite their feelings.
In response, and to argue that he's not the perfect guy that Kim Myung Hee believes him to be, Hwang Hee Tae names a "bad" quality about him, saying, "I'm an illegitimate child. Is that wrong?"
That said, even though their romance started off quite bad, and the odds are against them having a lasting relationship, it appears that there is no stopping this young love from blossoming. The teaser would show them getting together, with Hwang Hee Tae even going to her house to introduce himself to her family.
Naturally, the drama is not going to be interesting without some twists and turns. The teaser shows that Hwang Hee Tae's father got wind of this relationship and made sure to intervene. This is when everything starts to go downhill.
Lee Soo Chan warns Hwang Hee Tae to not cross the line. On the other hand, Lee Soo Ryun becomes mad at Kim Myung Hee for taking things too far with Hwang Hee Tae, when she only wanted her to go on a blind date on her behalf.
With so many things going against this young love, it remains to be seen if Hwang Hee Tae and Kim Myung Hee would eventually get their happily ever after. The teaser naturally would not say. It's up to viewers to start tuning in.
The show drops on May 3. It is shown every Monday and Tuesday at 9:30 PM KST.
