After the survival K-drama met the viewers on Netflix last September 17, and topping various charts a week after its release, many are already eager to know if Squid Game Season 2 is in the works or, at least, possible.
In his interview with Variety, Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk shared his future project plans, including the possibility of the sophomore season for the Korean megahit.
Netflix Squid Game Director Shares Behind-The-Scenes Journey
Writer-director Hwang Dong Hyuk expressed his gratitude for the success of his Squid Game. In an interview, the genius mentioned that he is not great at teamwork, but realized that he couldn't stay that way for a long time and plans to change his ways.
However, working solo in his previous projects has served him well.
When he talked about the accusations being thrown at him about obtaining quite a lot of ideas from other foreign survival-genre shows, such as Battle Royale, Hunger Games, and As the Gods Will, Hwang Dong Hyuk dismissed the flak by revealing that it took him 13 years to finish writing the Kdrama Squid Game.
He freely admits he was inspired by various Japanese comics and animation over the years, but his curiosity really motivated him into writing such genre.
Squid Game director Dong Hyuk shared, "I was financially unstable at that time and spent lots of time in cafes reading comics including Liar Game and Battle Royale. Then I got curious how I would feel if I took part in the games myself. But I realized that the games are too complex, and to lessen the hassle, I focused on using childrens' games instead."

Squid Game is Composed of Concept and Characters that the Viewers Can Easily Relate To
He believed that being simple and having easily relatable characters are the two key factors that helped Kdrama Squid Game receive such phenomenal success overseas.
Hwang Dong Hyuk shared that he wanted to produce a story that depicts an extreme competition in life or society, and with that, he also wanted to use characters that most of the viewers have all met in real life.
In giving more details about Squid Game, the director said that as a survival game, it is composed of entertainment and human drama. The games played in the series were extremely simple and easy to understand.
Due to that, it allows the viewers to focus on the characters, instead of being distracted by trying to interpret the rules.
Hwang Dong Hyuk Wants to Work with More Creative People for Squid Game 2
Meanwhile, apart from sharing his inspiration in work, Hwang Dong Hyuk stated that he wants to release a movie first before doing a Squid Game sequel.
In fact, the director is already in the process of drafting his next project "KO Club" (Killing Old Men Club).
"I don't have a well developed plan yet for Squid Game 2. It is quite tiring for now,but if I were to make a sequel, I would certainly do it with a team. I'd like to work with various experienced directors and creative writers if given the chance."
