'Chief Detective 1958' Episode 1 Rating: Period Drama Off To A Great Start

Lee Je Hoon, along with Lee Dong Hwi, Choi Woo Sung, and Yoon Hyun Soo, they team up to protect the citizens from vicious gangsters and bring back the glory of Jongnam Police Station.

The action-comedy K-drama, which is a prequel to the classic series "Chief Inspector," is off to an impressive start.

According to a Nielsen Korea, "Chief Detective 1958" Episode 1 garnered a double-digit rating of 10.1 percent, making it the most-watched series in its time slot.

At the same time, Lee Je Hoon's new drama broke MBC's record for the highest premiere ratings of any Friday-Saturday series.

As mentioned, "Chief Detective 1958" is based on a long-running series that ran from 1971 to 1989.

Moreover, "Chief Inspector'' garnered the highest rating of 70 percent.

Several decades later, MBC once again delivers the journey of the hotshot detective played by Lee Je Hoon.

'Chief Detective 1958' Episode 1: Park Young Han Struggles to Fit in His New Environment

The episode began with a glimpse of Park Young Han as a grandfather, who recalled his experience as a top-notch detective during his heyday along with his team.

The next scene featured Park Young Han as a countryside detective, who gained his reputation as a cow thrower. With his expertise, he was recruited by a police chief in Seoul.

On his first day and being innocent in city life, he volunteered to catch a group of gangsters.

Using his special method, he scared the group by bringing in snakes, and without breaking a sweat, he got a confession from him. However, Senior Superintendent Choi ordered him to release the group.

At this point, Park Young Han was disappointed with how the system at Jongnam Police Station worked. And through his superior, he learned that there were corrupt officials who joined hands with perpetrators.

Despite failing his first mission, Park Young Han met Detective Kim Sang Soon, a fellow senior detective who shared the same principles as him.

The only downside was that he was beaten up by a couple of gangsters. He was also baffled by how the chief defended the culprits and made Sang Soon apologize.

Instead of caving in, he beat the thugs and stormed off the police station.

Interestingly, this made Park Young Han impressed, and he was even delighted when he found out about his nickname, "Mad Dog," who was always on the hunt for criminals.

In the last scene, it showcased their first work together as detectives.

After getting enough information, Young Han invited Sang Soon for a mission where they caught their fellow cops covering up smuggling with an American weapon dealer.

However, as Park Young Han attempted to catch the culprits, Sang soon hit Young Han's head, making him unconscious.

Was Sang Soon part of the corrupt group, or was this part of Young Han's plan?

Catch Lee Je Hoon, Lee Dong Hwi, and more in the next episodes of "Chief Detective 1958," the gripping prequel to the classic series.
