Lim Chae-moo made headlines over the years for generously gifting apartments to all 26 of his employees, despite being over $10 million in debt.
In a recent interview, Lim said that at the height of his career in the 1980s, he told his employees that if they worked for him for three years, he would buy them an apartment.
He said, "I thought I would earn like that for the rest of my life." As he promised, Lim had 18-pyeong apartments and registered them under the name of his employees.
Those homes are, in fact, where many of those employees still live today.
The rollercoaster is also owned by Lim Chae-moo, who is the owner of the amusement park 'Duriland,' which opened in 1990 in Yangju-si, Gyeonggi-do.
He was famously known for not charging entry fees for 30 years due to seeing a couple unable to pay.
But, after shutting the park for renovations in 2017, he opened back up in 2020 and started charging admission to cover rising costs.
These days, Lim is financially struggling, with monthly electricity expenses of 20 million won (around $15,000).
He revealed that in order to help alleviate his debt, which he estimated between 14 and 15 billion won ($10 million+), he has already sold two apartments in Yeouido.
Lim is hopeful for the future, despite all this. "I knew I was going to get back what I put out, "he said. "The staff who were gifted the apartments would also be grateful to me."
Apart from his financial issues, the reason behind Lim's story hitting the headlines is his passion for his team that goes beyond numbers, showing a huge level of kindness that people easily relate to in hard times.
Even as Lim Chae-moo struggles financially, the generosity and help he provided to his employees live on.
