After starring alongside Chae Soo Bin an intimate bed scene in the final episode of MBC's drama "When the Phone Rings," actor Yoo Yeon Seok recently opened up regarding the filming of the scene.
In a January 6 interview with Sports Chosun, Yoo stressed the need to show the characters' emotional reconnection after years of disconnection.
The drama finished with high viewership ratings of 8.6% and tells the story of a couple in an arranged marriage that has not talked in three years.
The turning point is when they reconnect and remind each other why they fell in love in the first place when they receive the threatening phone call.
Yoo said, "It was a turning point of sorts for the couple that had been so emotionally and communicatively detached. We wanted to present it in a beautiful way, where we could infuse the intimacy of a couple that has been together for so long."
He continued, "Chae Soo Bin and I had different discussions about the scene and how it would feel for the audience during the shots to prepare for it."
Yoo said he did not expect the response to be so strong, especially from viewers in America and overseas.
"I am glad that people thought it was nice and tastefully done," he noted as fans and cast members alike viewed the finale together.
The actor also reminisced about the difficulty of saying romantic dialogues during various episodes of the show. He said he was initially overwhelmed by how dark the script was.
He explained: "When we were doing episodes 2 and 3, I felt a bit like there's no way of me doing these intense lines in episode 10. "
He added, though, that he felt like by the time they started filming, things became a little more natural regarding those emotional exchanges.
Chae Soo Bin took the supportive role and leaned on Yoo during filming, even calling him "Captain Yoo."
Yoo said he ended up taking a lead role in the absence of more senior actors, arranging schedules with the director, and managing a safe environment for the more dangerous scenes.
Viewers have noticed the pair's chemistry, and many have expressed hopes that the two will date in real life and get married.
In response to these sentiments, however, Yoo thanked everyone for the support but added that marriage is not something he can decide on by himself.
"Marriage is not a decision I can make by myself, he said. "But, hey I appreciate the support."
"When the Phone Rings," based on a web novel, has captivated audiences with its blend of romance, comedy, and suspense, drawing viewers into the complex love story of its lead characters.
Its success is also evident considering it was the fourth most streamed non-English TV show on Netflix globally in late December.
Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin continue to showcase their performances to global viewers as fans express their feelings about the series being over now.
