After Park Sung Hoon gained international recognition in his previous role, Jeon Jae Joon from "The Glory," the actor has wowed audiences across the world as Hyun-ju, a transgender special forces officer in Netflix's "Squid Game 2."
Park offered details about his portrayal of the multilayered character at a recent interview in a café in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
"That was something I wanted to depict, the anxiety below the strength and decisiveness of Hyun-ju," Park said.
"So instead of showing simply her hard and determined side, I thought it would be more well-rounded to add a portrayal of her leadership style juxtaposed with vulnerability."
Many have commended Park's showing for straying from the stereotypical images of trans figures often seen in dramas.
Hyun-ju is feminine in both looks and personality, but it can still bring out the fighting ability of the special forces when the plot calls for it.
Park worked closely with the production team to strike this balance.
"Hwang Dong Hyuk (director), costume and makeup team leader, and I tried a bunch of hairstyles and makeup. We did some various nail polish colors," he said.
"I took one look at myself in character and thought, 'Wow, I look like my older sister.'"
Park even changed his voice depending on the scene, rarely using the same tone twice.
"I was like, I sang in a higher register than my Sheriff voice -- I set a limit! When it was just a matter of life and death — when Hyun-ju was going to die — a more masculine voice came out," he said.
"I had many conversations ahead of time with the director about which emotion would be communicated in each of these moments so that it not only made sense in the context of the beat but also the context of the overall piece."
The character was partially inspired by Byun Hui-su, South Korea's first openly transgender soldier.
Park found out that the character was written for Byun by Director Hwang.
Park said, "When he came on board the project, director Hwang told me he had written the role for Byun Hui-su.
But I didn't set out to impersonate her, per se. So I created the film with the different challenges Hyun-ju would have had to face over the course of her life and I put those into the performance."
Park's "Squid Game 2" performance has received positive reviews, helping to broaden his acting palette, despite causing controversy around the world after mistakenly uploading an explicit image onto social media.
Park said: "Jeon Jae-joon was like a gift to me and I don't feel like I have to leave him quickly. Each role I take is too precious, so I think Jeon Jae-joon in the past will soon be buried."
Park's performance was a highlight of a series that has kept global eyeballs on "Squid Game 2" since its release.
