Former biology teacher turned award-winning actress and current director Byun Joong Hee is making headlines after news broke out about her past career and her dealings with students, where ex-students claim that she disciplined them to the point of trauma.
Recently, a post that went viral on the South Korean forum Theqoo pointed out how Byun made the shift from 39 years of teaching to acting at the age of 65.
Although she made her debut in 2018, she has been garnering attention through K-drama and films such as Hidden Face, Taxi Driver, and The Queen Who Crowns.
Nonetheless, the post also shared horrible memories of past students from Boin Middle School, where Byun had taught for over 30 years, who recollected experiencing corporal punishment. Former students described experiences of physical abuse, including one account of a student who said he was slapped so hard that his nose bled.
"She would slap me on both sides of the face so powerfully that blood would seep through my uniform,' one student said. Based on the other comments, it looks like I wasn't the only person who got slapped."
While many have commended her for creating a nurturing environment and have gone so far of calling her a "mother figure," her suitability to continue acting, in the wake of the allegations has come into question amidst the testimonies.
A lot of the reaction on social media was outraged, asking how she was able to show on screen again after those allegations.
"I hope she never acts again if this is true. I am so sorry to hear this, and this is sad — no, this is awful," one commenter said.
