Since media's coverage last month of the Jeju Air crash that killed 179 people, reporting has taken a darker turn, with the former head of Korea Airports Corp. Son Chang Wan -- found dead at home on January 21st -- coming under suspicion for overlooking safety measures at the airport.

As reported by Chosun Biz, Police found Son dead at approximately 6 p.m. that day in an apartment located in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province.

A family member, who had just returned home after being out, found him and alerted the authorities.

There are no indications of foul play, and investigators believe he may have taken his own life. They are looking into the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to the Korea Times, Son, who served as the state-run agency head from 2018 to 2022, supervised the repair work for the instrument landing system localizer at Muan International Airport.

The December 2024 crash reportedly involved a Jeju Air plane that had landed without its landing gear deployed and rolled off the runway, hitting a blast mound, which had been a subject of controversy in safety debates.

Koreaboo reported that Son's death has raised alarm because it comes at a time when investigations into the fatal incident are ongoing and authorities have yet to finalize the cause of death.

Renovated in 2020, the concrete structure is credited with promoting poor design, according to some experts, that worsened the crash.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport had previously said it would probe both the accident and the problematic embankment.

Even more damning, there was no video evidence of what transpired on the plane, as the recorders found on the aircraft only provide black box footage of a crash.

Son's death only serves as a further complication to an already nationwide tragedy as investigators work to put together the pieces of the crash.
