Netflix's new show 'Aema' is picking up a lot of buzz before it releases, thanks to its 19+ rating, provocative visuals, and survival and unity themes in the world of 1980s Korean cinema.

The drama recalls the making of the cult 1980s erotic movie Madame Aema and delves into the unseen truths of Chungmuro, Korea's filmmaking epicenter.
Director Lee Hae-young outlined the creative approach. "We wanted to faithfully recreate the atmosphere of Chungmuro at the time while keeping it relatable to modern viewers," he said.
The director further stated that the narrative is about more than historical recreation. "We wanted to expose the industry's hidden injustices behind glamorous appearances, using humor and satire to tell the story without making it overly heavy."
The production is backed by a lineup of stars. Costume director Choi Se-yeon explained how character development is reflected in wardrobe.
"Hee-ran wears extravagant designer fashion, while Ju-ae's wardrobe evolves with her rise from novice to star," she explained.
Set designer Jung Yi-jin emphasized the meticulous effort involved in building realistic 1980s settings.
"We recreated iconic locations like Cheongmaek Cafe, film offices, sets, and theaters, symbolizing the era's cinematic landscape," Jung explained.
Early stills have caused online frenzy. One of the viewers wrote, "This is a must-watch" as a response to Netflix's teaser photos.
The series has also received commendations from other filmmakers. Director Lee Jong-pil said it is "a suspenseful exhibition of empowered characters in a harsh age."
Director Byun Young-joo called it "a crazy but funny depiction of survival in the midst of oppression and hypocrisy."
Director Kim Ji-woon referred to it as "a blend of satire and humor to reveal the dark impulses and scandals of the 1980s cinema world."
Cast members for the project expressed their opinions about the characters and story. Go Ah-sung stated she was impressed by lead actress Lee Ha-nee's performance. "Hee-ran's character and Lee Ha-nee's acting are both appealing," she said.
Bang Hyo-rin stressed the development of her character. "Ju-ae's transformation visible to others was what attracted me to this role," she said.
Lee Je-hoon pointed out the overall theme of solidarity. "The significance of women's relationships lies at the core of the series," he explained.
Other actors were equally enthusiastic. Jung Joon-won and Park So-dam indicated that the series "breaks down social prejudices and presents a stark survival story."
Lead actress Lee Ha-nee, who is expecting her second child, showed up in person at the production press conference despite initial plans for a virtual showing. Her commitment, she stated, proves her devotion to the part.
Aema will be released later this year on Netflix.
