Box Office 2014 results are in! Disney's latest animated movie "Frozen" and Warner Bros. epic blockbuster "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" started the New Year with the same status as they left last year in their familiar spots atop the U.S. box office.
"Frozen" led the way with $8.7 million for a six-week total of $271.9 million, followed by "The Hobbit" with $7.8 million for $209.3 million. "The Hobbit" has also earned almost $465 million overseas.
Paramount's "The Wolf of Wall Street" finished in third garnering $5.6 million, giving the Martin Scorsese black comedy $47.1 million in its first eight days. Sony's "American Hustle" finished fourth with $5.4 million getting nearly $73 million in three weeks.
Paramount's "Anchorman: The Legend Continues" came in fifth with $4.9 million for $95 million after 15 days. The comedy sequel should crack the $100 million mark by the weekend.
Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks" and Fox's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" tied for sixth with $4.1 million each. "Saving Mr. Banks" has gone past $48 million three weeks and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" has earned $35.5 million in eight days.
Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" continued to burn bright after a month and a half in theaters with $2.9 million for a domestic total of $398.4 million setting it up to cross the $400 million mark domestically before the weekend.
"Catching Fire" is only $10 million short of the final U.S. earnings of $409 million for both 2012′s "The Hunger Games" and Disney/Marvel's "Iron Man 3." "Iron Man 3" currently carries the title of top domestic grosser for 2013 movies.
"Catching Fire" has a worldwide total is $806.4 million to date with $408 million internationally.
"Catching Fire" had enough heat on New Year's Day to outgross a pair of underperforming films that opened Christmas Day namely Universal's "47 Ronin" with $2.6 million for a $26.4 million take and Warner's "Grudge Match" with $2.2 million and for an $18.5 million total take.
