Reports say that the city medical examiner has confirmed Tuesday that the dismembered remains found in East River, Queens were those of a 14- year old autistic boy missing since October, Avonte OQuendo.

According to news reports, about 91 percent of autistic children who wander out from their home usually drown.

Avonte's parents had their hope us despite his poor chances of survival, saying that he would not have fallen into the river, since he was afraid of the water. Avonte could not speak or hear.

A massive search for Avonte ensued with announcements on subways, posters and his mother's plea to find the missing boy from police vans.

According to the family attorney, David Perecman, "This is the first time, except for brief moments, where I saw Vanessa just crying and crying."

During the search for Avonte, the family had mentioned they would file a lawsuit against the Department of Education for the loss of their son, but their attorney said that they are in mourning now.

Perecman told Bronx.NY1.com, "They will go through the stages that you have to go through in order to accept what has happened," adding, "I'm sure there will be anger."

DNA tests confirmed that the body parts recovered from East River were those of Avonte.

Police Department spokesperson Stephen Davis says, "The big finding is going to be if they come up with a cause of death. And that is a big 'if' in a case like this, where the body is in the water for so long," autismdailly newscast.com reports.

It appears there is no evidence of foul play and it is likely for bodies to be dismembered when they are in the water for a long time.
