Before a Google smartwatch release date can be set, folks at the Mountainview, California firm are asking the questions: " What is it about our daily activities makes us fatter, more alert? What helps us get better sleep and be more productive?"
This has something to do with pattern recognition and solving this problem could be key to overcoming hurdles in wearable technology.
Ultimately, it's all about self-improvement and this is at the heart of today's technology. How can I make daily decisions better. Techcrunch talked to Google's Ray Kurweil, chief of engineering. The decision making patterns that we make reveal data about how we can become the persons individually. That's why wearable technology will dominate in the near future, since everyone lives to be a better person.
So, Kurweil is on the path to constructing a "cybernetic friend" for everyone and it just might be called a smartwatch. So far, we have the Samsung Galaxy Gear, with a second version likely to be outed on February 24 at the opening of the World Mobile Congress 2014 in Barcelona. The Gear 2 is rumored to be a linked release with the highly anticipated Samsung flagship phone, Galaxy S5.
Since we have so many wearable devices unveiled in the last year or so, and displayed at tradeshows like CES 2014, consumers are head over heels over these smart gadgets - so much so that they probably don't know which one to get. Among the more prominent wearable devices are the Google Glass, Intel's Wearable Bracelet with sensors that can detect a plethora of activities, an expected iWatch that everyone's is watching out for, and several digital health devices introduced at CES in Las Vegas.
Smart scales, watches, headbands, and apps are other tech devices that have already hit the market. The theme is all about being better at something, whether it's exercising or losing weight. Vital signs sensor patients and keep them in touch with their body's natural patterns, while Polar is working on a smartwatch that gauges training levels of athletes.
Google has the weighted responsibility of decoding data so that it can be useful for consumers, beyond the smartwatch just taking a phone call which can be done by a smartphone as well. Google Glass using prescription lenses and frames is the kind of meaningful and practical product that consumers are looking for.
Rumors suggest that it's likely that Google is working on a Nexus smartwatch that has longer battery charge life, something Larry Page wants to accomplish with smartphones too. Google is also working on better user responsiveness to make the smartwatch a more integrated device and it will be equipped with the Google Now prediction system to provide more information to the wearer.
