The How I Met Your Mother spinoff is already in the works, and the finale hasn't even aired yet. The show, which has lasted nine years, will end on March 31, but 20th Century Fox Television seems to be very keen to continue the franchise - or at least some form of it - by immediately coming up with a new show.
Called How I Met Your Dad, the spinoff will have an entirely different set of characters, but with the same concept as its predecessor. This time around, it will have a female protagonist (filling the original Ted Mosby's shoes), telling her love story in retrospect.
In fact, the show has already cast the lead role. Indie actress, writer, and filmmaker Greta Gerwig will be playing Sally, described to be a female Peter Pan. The character has just realized that she has nothing in common with her husband of less than a year, and is right on the brink of breaking up with him. Sally will have supportive friends and family to get advice from though, and those people will make up the rest of the cast.
Gerwig is known for indie projects such as Nights and Weekends and Greenberg. She hit the mainstream with No Strings Attached in 2011, and was in the Arthur remake with Russell Brand. She co-wrote (with Noah Baumbach) and starred in the 2012 film Frances Ha, for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. She is also reportedly getting producer credit for How I Met Your Dad, and will most likely write for the show as well.
The spinoff was created by most of the same people behind How I Met Your Mother. Writer and executive producer Carter Bays as well as director and executive producer Pamela Fryman are a part of it.
