The new Star Wars movie has found its villain in the form of Adam Driver!
Adam Driver from HBO'S "Girls" series is cast as the main villain in the Episode VII of the Star Wars saga and series creator Lena Dunham confirmed the news in his Twitter account.
Adam Driver plays a character in the "vein" of Darth Vader according to Variety. The rumoured deal is not complete, but is expected to close soon. Variety also said the delay came from scheduling issues with Star Wars and Girls.
Girls creator Lena Dunham appeared to confirm the news on Twitter:
It's the first new cast announcement for JJ Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII", which is expected to follow the classic trio of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo introduced in the first trilogy of the Star Wars franchise. Original actors Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford have all confirmed their involvement in the new film.
Abrams recently announced that the script he co-wrote with Lawrence Kasdan was finished and that they would begin zeroing in on casting decisions soon. Michael Arndt wrote the original draft, with Kasdan and Abrams taking over last fall.
Disney was also rumored to be looking at Michael Fassbender and Hugo Weaving for the villain role.
While Driver has received acclaim for his role on "Girls," he has become more in demand for high-profile features lately. He is currently filming Warner Bros.' "Midnight Special" and is also attached to Martin Scorsese's "Silence" starring Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson. He is repped by Gersh and can currently be seen on the third season of "Girls" airing on HBO as well as the Shawn Levy pic "This is Where I Leave You" which bows this fall.
Disney has been quickly ramping up the "Star Wars" universe since buying Lucasfilm for $4 billion in October, 2012. In addition to the "Star Wars" films, the studio is developing theme park attractions, TV shows and an extensive line of merchandise.
The first part of the trilogy is set to premiere on 18 December 2015.
