300: Rise of an Empire, the sequel based on Frank Miller's newest graphic novel Xerxes, will release tomorrow, March 7. 300: Rise of an Empire is told in the breathtaking visual style of the 2006 blockbuster "300."
The sequel pits the Greeks, including Greek General Themistokles (played by Sullivan Stapleton) against invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes and the commander of the Persian navy, Artemesia in another historical battle that took place days later on the water. As the two main male leads, played by Gerard Butler and Michael Fassbender, in the original "300" died, it seems that "300: Rise of an Empire" director Noam Murro decided to focus more of the attention on the females of the movie. Lena Headey, 40, plays the grieving Spartan queen whose husband dies and is urged by the Themistokles to battle the Persians on another front. "Lena is the glue to both stories," says director Noam Murro.
Early reviews praise the strong female roles played by the French actress Eva Green, last seen in 2012 in the movie "Dark Shadows" with Johnny Depp, and Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey. While "300" was about masculine bravado, the sequel seems to be more focus on the women. According to USA Today, director Murro says that Green is "shy and an introvert" in person, but he knew that she was right actress to play the bold and daring part. He is quoted saying, "I said, 'I would like you to cut off this man's head and kiss it.' And she said 'OK.' She understood the moment on every level, and she just did it."
The 300 sequel is being released tomorrow, March 7, the same weekend as the equally anticipated "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," a 3D computer-animated comic science fiction film based on the characters from the "Peabody's Improbable History" segments of the beloved 1960s television series "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show." Early reviews of the movie are positive, with critics saying that the movie is a worthwhile trip back in time.
